Baby and toddler

Babies and young children are more vulnerable to environmental chemicals than adults. Pound for pound they eat, drink, and breathe more, their organs and nervous systems are still developing through windows when exposure can have lasting effects, and their bodies are less able to break these chemicals down. Crawling and hand-to-mouth habits add to it. That is why reducing what they are exposed to early matters more than it does later in life.

Travel crib

Do not replace the mattress that comes with a travel crib.

The thin pad is thin on purpose. Adding a thicker mattress, or any extra padding, lifts the baby and opens a gap against the soft mesh wall. Infants suffocate in that gap. The CPSC knows of 494 crib mattress incidents including 139 deaths between 2010 and 2021, and in 2022 a federal rule banned supplemental mattresses for mesh play yards outright. Aftermarket play yard mattresses were still being recalled or flagged by the CPSC through 2025 and 2026, and they are sold on the same pages as the cribs.

Use only the mattress that came with the crib, or one that names your exact brand and model. Never stack mattresses. Never add padding, bumpers, pillows, or loose bedding. A fitted sheet is the only thing you add.

If you want organic fiber against your baby here, a fitted sheet is the way to get it. Not a mattress.
