There is a laundry list of health and environmental concerns with synthetic clothing. Petroleum-based polymers (plastic) are primarily used to create synthetic fibers such as polyester, nylon, acrylic, and spandex. Synthetic clothing can be treated with more than 8,000 synthetic chemicals such as PFAS, Flame Retardants, Azo Dye, Nonylphenol Ethoxylates (NPES), Heavy Metals, Volatile Organic Chemicals (VOCs) and Phthalates. Our skin is the largest organ and chemicals in synthetic clothing can be absorbed by skin. Many of these chemicals are linked to cause cancer, affect neurological function, alter hormone levels and disrupt the reproductive system, and more. Microplastics have been found in human tissues, organics and blood, and microfibers have been found in many microplastic studies. Microfibers are synthetic fibers that can be inhaled through accumulation in household dust and indoor air. Washing chemically treated synthetic clothes leads to microfibers ending up in gray water which releases toxicity into the environment affecting aquatic life.
